MEDICARE EDUCATION & OVERVIEW

Understanding the Four Core Parts of Medicare

Medicare has different parts that cover different types of healthcare services. Understanding how they work together is an important first step before choosing coverage.

PART A

Hospital Insurance

Part A generally helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care under qualifying circumstances, hospice care and certain home health services. Costs and eligibility rules apply.

PART B

Medical Insurance

Part B generally helps cover physician visits, outpatient care, preventive services and medically necessary equipment. Monthly premiums and cost-sharing may apply.

PART C

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through Medicare-approved private plans. Many plans include Part D drug coverage. Provider networks, costs and benefits vary by plan and location.

Prescription Drug Coverage

PART D

Part D helps cover eligible prescription drugs through Medicare-approved private plans. Formularies, pharmacy networks, premiums and out-of-pocket costs vary.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is different from Part C. It can help pay certain Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs and is generally paired with Original Medicare rather than Medicare Advantage.
